Gilbert Baker was an American artist, gay rights activist, and designer best known for creating the iconic rainbow flag, which has become an internationally recognized symbol of LGBTQ+ pride. He was born on June 2, 1951, in Kansas, United States, and passed away on March 31, 2017.
Baker first designed the rainbow flag in 1978 for the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade, in response to a need for a symbol that represented the LGBTQ+ community. The flag originally featured eight colors, each with its own symbolic meaning. Over time, it has become widely adopted and is now commonly displayed at LGBTQ+ pride events worldwide, representing diversity, inclusivity, and the fight for equality.
